Kolam

Kolam (கோலம் – in Tamil)

To learn more about what the name Kolam means, checkout https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kolam , to see what we really do visit https://kolam.com (buy silk sarees directly from weavers and target the market in USA)

It is close to 4 years of research, reading, traveling, conversation with weavers, kind of became obsessed with the idea and wanted a solid brand name that could convey that is every household name, traditional, auspicious and kolam was #1 that could connect the dots in my mind and the domain name happened to be available in https://brandbucket.com for purchase

I was in Chennai, India around last year Jun 2019 and couldn’t immediately decide whether to acquire the domain or not. If you have read the wikipedia article or if you are from Southern part of India you will know the importance of Kolam aka Muggulu or Rangoli and what part it plays in millions of households every day, during festivals and functions.

So for a week from start of June 1st 2019 to June 9th 2019, I decided not to buy and during my time outside in bike couldn’t help notice kolam in shops, women putting kolam in early mornings, temples having kolam

and yes it was me who took the above and below picture and probably another hundreds of kolam that I witnessed before making the decision to go ahead and buy the domain name

So initiated the process with brandbucket on June 9th 2019

The seller was in travel and didn’t hear back immediately, brandbucket team was very professional and put in all efforts in updating me and getting the domain finally on June 19th 2019

Well, that was kind of 10 days. No big deal, well kind of big deal and finally was worth the wait. Was putting out a quick possible logo right away 🙂

This post is like a dot in kolam, will continue to put more dots and see if they all connect together. What happened the first 3 years? How did friends, family and others start helping? What stories weavers got to tell? Where did the travel began? Why is it not just another retail? What’s happening right now with Kolam and what the future holds for it?

Thanks for reading and for your time. I will appreciate if you can comment your thoughts or similar experience. Feel free to reach me out at contact@kolam.com to know more about kolam.

Thank you, Siva
